What is heat soak in a diesel intercooler?

Oct 21st,2026 5 Views

Heat soak is the condition where the intercooler and the pipework around it have absorbed so much heat from the engine bay that they stop cooling the charge air and begin to warm it instead. It appears after a hot shutdown, in slow traffic, or when a truck idles with the cooler breathing air that has already passed through the radiator and little forward flow reaches the core. The driver feels it as power that fades after the first pull and does not come back until the vehicle is moving again at road speed. The cause is the metal and rubber mass of the system settling at the temperature of its surroundings, so charge air passes through a core that can no longer take heat out of it. Recovery comes from airflow through the core. Fitment that limits the problem is a cooler fed by outside air, with pipework kept away from the exhaust.
