A boost leak is pressurized charge air escaping from the intake system before it reaches the engine, so the turbocharger delivers more air than the engine actually receives. The usual signs are power that falls away under load, black smoke as fuel goes in without matching air, a whistle or hiss that rises with boost, and consumption that drifts worse without any change in driving. The common causes are a hose that has softened or split at a joint, a clamp that has lost tension, a cracked plastic pipe, a failed boot at the cooler, or a damaged core. Diagnosis starts with a visual pass over every joint on the charge path, looking for the oil mist that marks an escape point, then a listen while the engine is loaded. A pressure test of the system confirms the location, and the fix is a hose, clamp or cooler rather than a tune.
