How is the inside of a titanium weld protected during fabrication?

Oct 15th,2026 11 Views

Fudiesel protects the inside of a titanium weld by displacing air from the back of the joint before and during welding. Titanium reacts with oxygen and nitrogen at welding temperature, and an unprotected back face oxidizes to a straw, blue or gray color and becomes brittle, which is a fault that cannot be seen from outside the pipe. For tube joints the bore is purged with inert shielding gas through a gas line, a trailing dam or a sealed purge chamber, and purging starts early enough that the whole enclosed volume is displaced before the arc is struck. Gas flow is set so the weld pool is shielded on the front face while the back face stays bright and metallic. Piping that cannot be purged internally is assembled with gas backing where the design allows. After welding, the internal weld face is inspected for color and cleanliness. The acceptance standard is confirmed against the drawing or sample and stated in the written quotation.
