How does tear strength affect a silicone hose in service?

Oct 22nd,2026 4 Views

Tear strength is the resistance of the rubber to a cut that is already started, and it decides how much abuse a hose survives during installation and removal. A silicone hose is rarely torn by pressure alone. It fails at a nick. A screwdriver prying a hose off a barb, a sharp edge on a clamp, a careless cut with a knife each start a small tear, and once that tear has a start the rubber parts along it under load. Compounds with high tear strength blunt that progress, so a scratched hose still seals and a clamp edge does not cut through the wall. Reinforcement helps but cannot rescue a weak compound, because the tear runs through the silicone between the plies. Tear strength is judged with hardness and elasticity, since a compound that is too stiff resists cutting but seals poorly. Fudiesel confirms tear and handling requirements against the drawing or the supplied sample and states the agreed detail in the written quotation.
