On a turbo diesel the charge air system has a hot side and a cold side, and the two are not interchangeable. The hot side runs from the compressor outlet to the intercooler inlet. Air there has just been compressed, so it is hot and its pressure arrives in pulses from the compressor wheel, which means the hose sees cycling pressure and radiant heat from the turbine side at the same time. The cold side runs from the intercooler outlet to the intake manifold. Air there has given up its heat, so the hose works at a lower temperature but carries a steadier pressure and often sits in a shorter, more direct run. Material and reinforcement follow the side a hose is built for, because a hot side hose is judged on heat aging while a cold side hose is judged more on pressure retention and fit. Fudiesel confirms which side a hose serves against the drawing or the supplied sample and states it in the written quotation.
