What is compression set in a silicone hose?

Oct 22nd,2026 3 Views

Compression set is the thickness a rubber does not recover after long squeezing, and on a silicone hose it is the difference between a joint that stays tight and one that seeps. A hose lives under clamp load for its whole service life. The clamp presses the wall onto the pipe, and the rubber is expected to push back as long as the joint is in use. If the compound takes a set, the wall stays thin where the clamp sat, clamp load falls away and coolant or charge air finds the gap. Heat accelerates the effect, because warm rubber relaxes faster and a thin wall has less material to store the recovery. Compounds built for low compression set hold clamp load far longer in hot service. Set is judged with hardness and wall thickness together, since a thick wall can mask a poor compound. Fudiesel confirms compression set and wall requirements against the drawing or the supplied sample and states the agreed detail in the written quotation.
