Intercooler thermal efficiency is a way of expressing how much of the heat available in the charge air is actually removed as that air passes through the core. It is calculated by comparing the temperature drop the air achieves across the core with the difference between the air entering the core and the cooling medium, which is normally ambient air. The result is a ratio, so it describes performance as a share of what the cooling air could theoretically absorb rather than as an absolute temperature. Two cores can reach the same efficiency while behaving very differently, because one may be working against a hot underhood stream and another against clean, cool air. Efficiency is therefore read alongside pressure drop, since a core that cools well but restricts flow makes the turbocharger work harder and gives back part of the gain. Fudiesel confirms the duty point and the airflow a core must serve against the drawing or the supplied sample and states the agreed basis in the written quotation.
