When an order covers several product lines, the schedule is built backwards from the ship date rather than forwards from the order date. The line with the longest route, usually a moulded hose or a fabricated exhaust system, sets the critical path, and the shorter lines are released so they finish close to the same point without sitting finished for weeks. Capacity is booked against the tooling each line needs, which is why Fudiesel asks for the full mix at the quotation stage instead of quoting one line at a time. Where a line slips, the buyer can choose between holding the shipment and splitting it, and that decision is easier to make early than at the port. Buyers with a fixed retail launch should give the ship date first and let the schedule work back from it, because the alternative is air freight on the last item.
